The Story Of Porsche Automobiles

The story of Porsche could begin in 1950 with the introduction of the Porsche 356 to the United States by Max Hoffman. It could begin in 1948, when the first auto bearing the name of Porsche came out. However, to get a real grip on the heritage of Porsche, you must go back as far as 1875. In September of that year, Ferdinand Porsche was born in the bohemian village of Haffersdorf.
Ferdinand Porsche showed indications of his technical genius at the age of 18 when he wired the family home for electricity. His only formal education was received when he was a part-time engineering student in Vienna, although the title Doctor is often appended to his name. By the time he was 25, Porsche had gone into automotive design. The Viennese firm of Loyner & Co. accepted his first car design. Over the next twenty years, he successfully associated himself with every major car manufacturer in Germany, and he designed about a dozen of the most technically important automobiles in history at the same time.
When he worked for Mercedes-Benz, he helped to create the SSK series, while for NSU, he designed the Auto Union Wandered and the Type 32, which as an ancestor of the Volkswagen Beetle. His disagreements with Mercedes-Benz over the companys engineering policies prompted him to establish his own engineering group, which became Porsche A.G. He collected a premier group of engineers to work under the name of Doctor of Engineering Ferdinand Porsche, Inc. Construction Facility for Land, Air, and Sea Transportation in Stuttgart. His son, Ferry, was one of his employees, and his major interest was in sport and racing cars.
The elder Porsche and his engineers were busy. They developed for Steyr, a luxury sedan in Austria, but this vehicle did not make it out of the prototype stage. They also worked for Auto Union, which is now Audi, the firm that created the Front, the first front-drive economy car in the world. They also created the mid-engine Grand Prix cars and supercharged V-12 and V-16 engines. These, along with the racers from Mercedes-Benz, dominated European auto racetracks for almost ten years.
The company created its most well-known designs for NSU and Zundapp. Prototypes were characterized by Porsches torsion-bar suspension and rear-mounted engine. Neither of the firms manufactured the designs, so Porsche sold the idea to the German government. He then provided the oversight on the construction of a plant in Wolfsburg to build the design. He called it the Type 60, but the world knows it as the Volkswagen Beetle.
After World War II, the Porsche Company began to create the vehicles that now bear the name of Porsche. Almost one hundred years later, Porsche became the marque, and the family that developed the unique and lasting contributions to automotive design and engineering has gone down in history.
What Is Abstract Art? One Artists Point Of View

So many people must be asking this question all the time … and not getting satifactory answers because I keep seeing articles on the subject.
So, to add to the mix, I thought that, because I am an Abstract Artist, I would give my answer.
First lets see what the official version has to say. The second definition of “abstract” in the Concise Oxford Dictionary says “Idealistic, not practical; abstruse; (Art etc.) free from representational qualities” And it is this last description I want to look at.
That which is free from representational qualities is a picture (or other type of art discipline) that does not depict any recognisable image such as a figure, building, or sky. There is no purposeful reference to anything physically particular. Jackson Pollock, for instance, was one of the first abstract artists and produced the finest of examples… take a look at this: www.nga.gov/feature/pollock/painting.html
If you study this image closely it will soon become apparent that he randomly dripped paint onto a board laying flat on the floor. And if you read up a bit about him you will find that he even suspended paint-filled cans above a board, punched holes in the bottom of the can, and allowed the cans to swing, or be nudged, the paint slowly dripping to give a totally no-representative image. The important thing to remember here is that he had no intention of producing any kind likeness to anything physical whatsoever. So this style of art is truly an abstract work.
The difficulty comes when a piece of art is produced in a very loose and, even, child like way. Some might regard it as abstract. Here is an example of what I believe is NOT abstract art: go to www.guzzardi.it/arte/ then on the left side click on “Artisti Ceris” then click “D” go to the fourth name from the bottom “Jean Dubuffet” and click “Art Brut” there you will find three images of his work … each one depicts roughly painted figures and faces, and although the left hand image looks like imageless lines I do believe there are faces to be seen there (Don’t get me wrong – Jean Dubuffet produced many abstract works … in fact that is what he was most famous for … it’s just that these examples are not).
Some might call these Dubuffet paintings semi-abstract – but I do not. For me there is no such thing – either the picture does not represent anything … or it does - no matter how basic.
Another puzzle might be the later works of Mark Rothko. Look here: http://www.nga.gov/feature/rothko/late7.shtm Some might argue that a basic rectangular shape could be regarded as a representational image. But you need to read about his life and philosophy to understand that he was not painting rectangles but what has become known as colour fields. The scale of his massive works and the fact that he gave up even titling his pieces should dispell any possibility of his work being anything other than the purer form of abstract art.
I would like to finish with one of my own enigmatic examples: www.ablot.com/passion3.htm in which I have sort to “portray” the idea of deep or spiritual movement. Such an explanation is, of course, dangerous in that I have used words like “portray”, “spiritual” and “movement” – all of these have associations … but not necessarily physical ones! It is my belief that there is a relationship to be had with my spirit … and it is the purist form of abstraction. You can find out more about that in my blog on my website.
The only other thing to say here is that the abstract artist is seeking to put on canvas such non-figurative “imagery” as emotion, thought, the greater self, anarchy, and total randomness … to name but a few. And I intend to examine these “non-figures” in a bit more detail in my articles starting with “How to produce an abstract image – Part 2″ You will be very welcome to come along and read it!

Taking out the phonebook and picking a course for its name is not a good idea for beginning golfers. Choosing a course is one of the most important decisions a golfer can make when they are first starting out. Golfers need to have confidence to continue to excel at their game, if they choose a course too hard this could ruin ones passion for the game. Conversely golfers wont want to play a course too easy because they must be challenged to play their best each time they step on the course.
The actual build or DNA of a course can be defined by its slopes, water, traps, rough, trees, and greens. Some courses are consistently hillier than other courses. Some courses are surrounded by water; others are dry as a desert. Many courses utilize trees as a natural barrier against the public, thus many courses are plentiful with trees. The physical landscape of a course can make a lot of difference in selecting a course for beginners. Typically you wan to choose a course that is less hilly, and doesnt have too much water attached to it. This will allow beginning golfers to hone their swings, and skills before trying to master a PGA level course. Also beginner courses should have limited brush, this makes finding your balls much easier assuming you hit a few into the rough.
Cost should be another factor in choosing a course for beginners. Courses that are too costly can be unrealistic to play on because of their cost. Unless the golfing budget is as big as a 6 figure salary, you want to be able to play on courses that will allow for an easy return at little cost. Golf, like any other sport requires a tremendous amount of practice, and patience. If you play less costly courses you will have more opportunity to play the same course often, because its not going to put a dent in your bank account. So choosing a cost effective course for beginners is a great first step. Look for public courses, or find out where the local college tees off. Typically the college will have its team play on a course that isnt going to cost the school too much money.
Rules on the course are another important aspect in selecting a course. Find out what the dress code is, who is allowed to play, if they have golf carts, if they require a caddy, and if they have additional rules for guests. Many times golf clubs will have additional rules for guests that can be prohibitive towards your game. If you are playing on a course that requires you to do a bunch of tasks that will distract your game, dont play on such a course.
Tee time in golf is also important in choosing a course. Call the local clubs and ask about the tee times available for the day you want to play. If there is a large amount of players teeing up on certain day, it may be a good idea to wait for another day to play. Typically if there are many tee times booked the course will be full of players that might want to play through your hole because you are new and still learning, thus taking more time to get your shot off. Be sure to go to a course that doesnt have too many tee times scheduled for the day you select, if there is a bunch of times already booked simply ask for a less busy day.

Mr Lear’s Dream – Hopefully A Dream to Come True

I have known L E Lear for over 40 years. At my high school reunion on October 8, 2005 I noticed he was missing from the event. He was working on his dream. I will get to that in a little while. I wanted to see him so I sought out Harold Knox, a mutual friend, at the reunion to see if I could get L Es phone number. Success was at hand. L E and Harold still see each other.
The next day I contacted L E and we spoke for about 15 minutes on the phone. He was still as nutty as ever. He works out deals with Burger King, and McDonalds to get better pricing for buying bulk breakfast sandwiches. Thats my boy.
We reunited October 20 at his brothers house in Union, New Jersey. It was great to see him. My artistic friend. The sculptor.
I was so excited to see what he was working on. He told me all about it when we spoke the a few nights ago. I still cant believe what I witnessed. L E has been working on a model of Yankee Stadium. Some people work on model airplanes or cars or trains. L E is the first person I know of that is building a model stadium.
He has poured his soul, his heart and his body into this incredible project for four years. Sacrificing income and living any kind of normal life. Hey that is what this artist chose to do. His seven foot wide, 11 foot long and four foot high replica must be seen to be believed. The scale he uses is one inch represents 12 feet.
His objective is to have Yankee Stadium, the current Yankee Stadium, refurbished, remodeled, and redone with a retractable roof. He had the roof already erected. This newest Yankee Stadium would have a walkway around an upper level that people could walk around. Each few feet of walking would provide a different sight of the field. There would also be train tracks that ran right up to the ballpark. Quite convenient for those that use mass transit to get to the game. The Major Deegan Highway would have easy access to leave the stadium. This would allow for easy departure once the game was over. Additional parking would be adjacent to the Stadium. Two parking areas would be attached to the ballpark.
Now get this. In the background, next to the stadium would be tennis courts. You would be able to play some tennis and then go to the game.
Here is the icing on the cake. We all know that a new Yankee Stadium is in the works. We all know how astronomical the pricing will be to erect a new house that George builds. We all know how important luxury suits are to a team owner. They bring in lots of revenue. L Es resurrected stadium, with retractable roof will have over 200 luxury corporate boxes. Check this out. There will also be family suits under the walkway only for families. These suits will be sold at a reduced cost so more families can get to the Stadium as a family.
This entire project will cost less than the proposed new Yankee stadium.
So Yankee brass, save some money, keep the tradition and create a new type of ballpark with all the amenities. Every one wins. The traditionalists keep the old ballpark and the owner moves Yankee Stadium into the 21st century.
I have seen the conditions that L E has worked in to create his dream. Mr Lear has been working in a small area with little room to maneuver. Poor air circulation in winter and summer. His dream can come true. I love the idea. This replica is an incredible piece of work. All the way to the finest detail.
My guess is that Yankee dignitaries like Yogi Berra, Babe Ruth, Mickey Mantle, Lou Gehrig, Phil Rizzuto, Whitey Ford, Ron Guidry, Thurman Munson, Craig Nettles, Joe DiMaggio, Bill Dickey and todays Yankees like A-ROD, Derek Jeter and Mariano Rivera would love to see this dream become reality.

High Gas Prices Inspire Con Artists

The high price of gasoline brings out the worst in some people. It also brings out the gullibility in others. A spate of rip-offs have been uncovered recently, all designed to take advantage of people’s desperation to lower their fuel bills.
Texas based company BioPerformance, Inc., was shut down in May for being an illegal pyramid scheme and marketing a “magic gas pill” that wasn’t magic at all–unless moth balls are magic.
Drawing on the desire for cheap gas at a time when gas prices are at record heights, BioPerformance claimed to have a “magic gas pill” that would increase fuel efficiency by 30% and reduce harmful emissions by half. In independent laboratory tests at the University of Texas and a university in Florida, the gas pills were discovered to be nothing but moth balls! Moth balls not only won’t improve gas mileage. they can actually hurt your car’s engine instead of helping it. Moth balls are also deadly to people, although the Bioperformance bottle claimed the pills were non-toxic.
“These claims are bogus,” said Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott. “The pill does absolutely nothing to improve gas mileage. The company is merely a smokescreen to trigger the recruitment of more and more paying members into what appears to be an illegal pyramid scheme.
Along with promoting a product that is dangerous, BioPerformance was found to be an illegal pyramid scheme masquerading under the disguise of a multi-level marketing company. In legitimate multi-level marketing, profit comes from how much product a person sells; in illegal pyramid schemes, profit comes from recruiting more people into the program.
According to the BioPerformance website, at the time the company was shut down, it had 4,500 members in Texas and $25 million in sales. All that was built in just five months, which goes to show how desperate people are to save money at the gas pump.

The difference between film and digital photography

There are many differences between film and digital photography. To most amateur photographers they do not matter much. They prefer the convenience, ease of use and lower cost of digital cameras and are not going to revert to the film age. However understanding the differences can help taking even better photos and can also help when debating with friends about the future of film.
Following is a list of differences that are important to understand. The differences are listed in no particular order.
The sensor: The most obvious difference between film and digital is the sensor used to take the photo. With film cameras a film sensitive to light is placed behind the lens. When a photo is taken the shutter opens for a predetermined period of time and light hits the film. The result is a photo printed on the film. To take a new photo the film has to be rolled and a fresh clean film is place behind the lens. With digital cameras a fixed electronic sensor (sometimes known as CCD) is situated behind the lens. The sensor is built from tiny light sensitive sensors each representing a pixel. When the shutter opens light hits the sensor and each pixel gets its value. Put together all the pixels comprise one photo. To take a new photo the photo is saved on a digital media and the CCD is electronically emptied.
What does a different sensor mean? The main difference is in the Depth of Field. Since digital sensors are smaller in size than a 35mm film the depth of field will be much higher and in fact in most compact digital cameras almost infinite. The result is that blur backgrounds can not be created.
The cost of a photo: Photos taken with a digital camera literally cost nothing. The photos are kept in erasable memory and thus can always be discarded at no cost. Also the photos you would like to keep can be copied to digital media such as a computers hard disk. With storage prices going down the cost of saving a photo on disk is practically zero. Film does cost money. With a film camera you have to pay for the roll of film, for developing the negative and for printing the photo. Every time you press the shutter button you spend money.
The capacity: With ever growing storage capacities digital cameras today can hold hundreds and sometimes thousands of photos on a single media. You can always have a few more in your pocket and changing is very fast. The result is that a digital camera has practically infinite capacity. You can shoot as many photos as you want and at the end of the day just dump them on your computers disk. Film cameras capacity is very limited. A roll of 36 photos can only hold 36 photos. After a roll is used changing to a new roll can take time and is not easy to do in scenarios such as darkness or a harsh environment. For that reason many professional journalists carry a few cameras on them and instead of changing rolls they turn and use another camera just so that they do not miss a shooting opportunity.
The feedback: One of the most important features of the digital camera is instant feedback. Almost all digital cameras include a small LCD screen. Once a photo is shot you can go back and watch it on that screen. The ability to see how the photo looks like results in better photos. If the photo is not good you can take another one. Being able to see the photos on the spot results in an educated decision how to fix a photo or how to better compose it. It takes a lot of the guessing away from photography. With film cameras there is no way to know how the photo on the film will look like when printed.
New shooting angles: Just a few days ago I took a great photo with my digital camera that I would have never taken with my film one. I shot a cat that was resting on little rock. I held the camera in my hand and positioned it down where it almost touched the ground and I started shooting. I probably took 50 or more photos. I immediately looked at the cameras LCD to review my photos and make sure they were focused and had the cat in them. The result was one great photo looking at the cat from the ground. I can not imagine myself just lying down on the dirty ground with a film camera looking through the viewfinder and perfecting that one shot.
With digital cameras you can actually take photos without having your eye glued to the viewfinder. Overhead shots where you raise the camera over your head are much easier to do since you can still see what the camera is shooting by just looking up at its LCD screen.
Correcting photos: With digital cameras photos can be corrected using photo editing software. Some correction abilities are built-in to the cameras but many more are available as software packages for your PC. With film cameras what you get is what you get. After the film is developed it is very hard to make any corrections. Usually if corrections are absolutely needed the negative or the printed photo will be scanned (i.e. converted to digital) corrected and then printed again (in a long and costly process).
Changing conditions: Every roll of film is designed for best results in a specific environment. For example there are indoor and outdoor films or films with different light sensitivity. If conditions change rapidly a film camera user will have to either shoot with the wrong film, change the roll (and usually lose photos that were not used in the current roll) or use another camera with a different film in it. The results of shooting with the wrong film can be distorted colors (reddish photos for example), a grainy photo and more.
With digital cameras the characteristics of the sensor can be changed instantly for each photo taken. With a click of a button the camera can be put in an indoor or outdoor mode, low light, night photography etc. Some cameras will automatically sense the scenario and set the sensor mode accordingly.
The myth of quality: While it is true that film photography has its advantages the claim for superior quality is no longer true. As digital camera evolved the quality of high end digital SLR cameras is superb and in many ways even better than film. When considering quality you should also consider the quality in terms of composition and the scenario caught in the photo. With digital cameras high capacity, zero photo cost and instant adaptability to changing conditions photographers can produce better compositions and experiment more to get the best photo possible.
Longevity: We have also paged through old photo albums of our grandparents. The photo looked a a bit yellow, scratched and just plain old.
